Introduction to the scroll Qingming Festival by the Riverside The scroll Qingming Festival by the Riverside is notable as one of the ten most classical and famous Chinese paintings. As a genre painting drawn on silk, the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1234) version measures 24.8 cm by 528.7 cm. It is the only one of Zhang Zeduan's works that has survived until today, and belongs to first class antiquities. The painting portrays the noisy street scenes of Bianjing during the Qingming Festival, revealing the boom of the said city as well as the urban economy of the Northern Song Dynasty. It offers us glimpses of the city life and people's life at that time. To sum up, it is a painting with high historical value. According to Literary Criticism Made in a Humble Hall (Volume Eight) by Qi Tengqian, there are a total of 1643 figures from all walks of life and 208 animals in the painting, surpassing classic novels such as Romance of Three Kingdoms (1191), A Dream of Red Mansions(975) and Outlaws of the Marsh (787) in terms of the number of figures. The painting consists of three sections. Unfolding the scroll, suburb sceneries of Bianjing will be seen first. The middle section depicts the busy scenes on the bridge and along the sides of the Bian River. The third section portrays street scenes in Bianjing. Among the figures in the painting, the largest one is less than 3 cm, and the smallest is as tiny as a bean. If studying them closely, one may find they are all vivid in form and spirit, very cute and interesting.
